Glasses in general today represent quite a tidy investment and a pair of high quality sunglasses, particularly if they include prescription lenses, can come at quite a high price. Having purchased your sunglasses therefore it is extremely important that you take good care of them. Here are seven tips to help you get the best from your sunglasses:
1. Sunglasses should be checked frequently for signs of wear and adjustments made where necessary. For example, if a hinge screw is coming loose then you should visit your optician to have it tightened or do this yourself with a small precision screwdriver.
2. From time to time you should check the alignment of your sunglasses by standing in front of a mirror. If they appear to be out of alignment or crooked then you should ask your optician to adjust the frame for you. This is, however, something that you should not try to do yourself as you could easily damage your sunglasses and could well invalidate any warranty as a result.
3. Inspect the lenses frequently for signs of scratches. Many sunglass warranties will cover you for scratches and so these should be dealt with under your warranty. Scratching can be a major problem with sunglasses and can best be avoided by either purchasing glass lenses, which have high scratch resistance, or by ensuring that your sunglasses include a scratch resistant treatment.
4. Clean your sunglasses frequently by rinsing them in lukewarm running water to wash off dirt and grit and then wash the glasses (frame and lenses) with lotion-free washing-up liquid. Finally, rinse thoroughly once again in lukewarm running water and dry the glasses with a lint-free cotton towel.
5. Always remove your sunglasses with both hands to avoid distorting the frame and, when you don't need to wear them again for a while, store them away in a protective case rather than simply leaving them lying around in the open. If your case is not immediately available leave the earpieces extended and place the glasses upside down on a flat surface and in a safe place.
6. If you have been perspiring then you should rinse off any perspiration and clean your sunglasses as soon as possible as sweat and oil from the skin can damage both the finish on the frame and any lens coatings.
7. Never leave your sunglasses on the dashboard of your car as the intense heat that can build-up inside a closed car on hot sunny days can easily damage both the lens coatings and the frame.
If you follow these simple tips then you will keep your sunglasses in great shape for years and they will serve you well.
Don't forget though that, no matter how well you look after your sunglasses, they will still only do the job that they were designed to do and it is often thought that sunglasses are sunglasses full stop. Nowadays however sunglasses come in a whole variety of not only different styles but, more importantly, different tints and each tint is designed for a purpose. One tint will be especially useful for general wear, while another will suits skiers, a third will be best for golfers and a fourth will meet the requirements of fishermen.
So, while you are taking care of your one pair of prized sunglasses it's worth reflecting on the fact that you might well be better off with more than just the one pair.
